Reporter Amy Knapp is nominated twice, for explanatory reporting of the Massillon school bond issue, and with former reporter Christina McCune for their spot news coverage of the Wendy's fire. The newspaper also is nominated twice for Best Special Sports Section - for its high school football tab and for its coverage of "The Rivalry" - and as the best sports section on a daily basis. Sports Editor Chris Easterling and sports writer Joe Mitchin are two of the three nominees for Best Sports Feature Writer. The Independent is competing in Division I against other newspapers with a daily circulation up to 7,999 for coverage of news and events in 2016.įive of the awards are for the newspaper's sports coverage. Staff members of The Independent have been nominated for 10 awards in the annual Ohio Associated Press Media Editors' contest.
